Profile:
How did you become
involved in athletics coaching?
I used to take my oldest son,
James, to VRAC three times a week and spend an hour or so waiting around for
him while he trained. After a few months I started joining in the sessions and
and progressed to coaching a little while after that.
What achievement are you most
proud of from your competing days?
At the age of 17 I held the
U20 stadium record (1:56.9) for 1500m at my local track in Essex where I grew
up.
What inspires you about
coaching?
My main inspiration is the
fantastic group of young people we have at VRAC. The camaraderie and support
they give each other is wonderful to see.
What is your favourite coaching
session?
I really enjoy the long runs on
a Sunday. There is a very relaxed atmosphere and it's a great opportunity to
catch up on what everyone has been doing during the week
Who is your athletics hero?
My athletics hero is Haile
Gebrselassie. As well as being a superb athlete he always has a smile on his
face even at the end of a race, regardless of whether he has won or not.
What is your top tip to
aspiring athletes?
I could choose the obvious like
train hard or eat well but for me the most important thing is to enjoy your
sport and keep smiling. You never know, you might end up as good as Haile!!
What do
you do when you're not coaching?
When I'm not coaching,
running around after my three children or working as Engineering Manager for a
company which manufactures pumps, I enjoy gardening, reading and watching most
kinds of sports.
