Excellent Results At

North Of England Track & Field Champs 2005

The club had a great first day of the championships where 5 medals and a championship record were attained during the North Of England Track and Field Championships at Cudworth at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium in  South Yorkshire.

A haul of 2 gold medals and 3 silver medals combined with a new championship record for club athletes plus a host of good performances left club coaches, athletes and parents more that satisfied.

Stevie Stockton won the gold medal and is now North Of England Champion in the under 17 ladies 3000 metres, where 7 and a half laps were completed in windy conditions.  Stevie was delighted with her gold medal which also resulted in a new personal best of 10.19 minutes, knocking off 3 seconds off her old personal best.

Hanna Hewitson was also in fine spirits after she won the gold medal and became joint holder of the championship record with a massive new personal best of 11.83 metres in the under 17 ladies triple jump.

Both Claire O`Reilly from Derby AC and Hanna from Vale Royal AC jumped to the same distance of 11.83 metres during a nail biting competition.  However, Hanna`s second jump of 11.68 metres was higher than that of Claires jump of 11.48 metres, therefore, Hanna won the competition on countback, yet both of them claimed the new championship record.

Jumps Coach Neil Templeman was delighted with the competition and had never heard of both girls jumping to the same distance before and gaining the championship record.  Even the officials had never heard of this before and were slightly unsure to the situation with regard to the record, but after consultation with senior figures in the North of England, it was decided that both girls would be the new record holders.

Hayley Jones who is 16 came away with 2 silver medals in the under 20 age group, despite still being in the under 17 age group Hayley decided to move up an age age group to have an attempt at 400 metres.  The under 17 ladies do not cater for 400 metres and Hayley wants to gain experience for next year when she moves up to the under 20 age group.

Hayley was extremely tired after the weekend but felt she learnt a lot especially about 400 metres running which she enjoyed when she got her breath back!!!  Hayley will now be concentrating on the Cheshire Schools and English schools which will be coming up in the next eight weeks.

Also in fine form was Laura Lambert who contested the under 17 ladies 800 metres to gain a silver medal after a heat and a final with a good time of 2.14 minutes in windy conditions at the South Yorkshire stadium up in the valley.  Laura was delighted with her medal as the quality of the field this year was particularly high and Laura really had to dig in to claim the medal.

There were other good performances by Morgan Brown (100 metres) along with Stephen Mitchell in the 1500 metres and Rachel Clewes in the 3000 metres.  Kate Howard also contested the 800 metres at her first North of England Championships.
